The increasing availability of digital data has reshaped the landscape of infectious disease surveillance, giving rise to digital epidemiology tools that augment traditional public health monitoring systems. This study evaluates the role of digital epidemiology in monitoring infectious diseases, analysing population mobility, and supporting real-time risk assessment at a global scale. It reviews the use of diverse data sources, including mobile phone mobility data, social media activity, web-based health searches, electronic health records, and digital disease surveillance platforms, to detect outbreaks, track transmission patterns, and anticipate emerging risks. The analysis demonstrates that digital tools can provide timely, high-resolution insights that improve situational awareness and enable faster public health responses, particularly during rapidly evolving outbreaks and in regions with limited conventional surveillance capacity. At the same time, the study identifies critical challenges, such as data quality and representativeness, algorithmic bias, privacy and ethical concerns, and the need for transparent and interpretable analytical models. The findings emphasise that digital epidemiology tools are most effective when integrated with established epidemiological methods, institutional oversight, and international collaboration frameworks. The paper concludes that, if governed responsibly, digital epidemiology offers a powerful complement to traditional surveillance systems, strengthening global infectious disease preparedness, response capacity, and evidence-based decision-making.
