This study focused on Bambusa vulgaris, a species belonging to the Poaceae family, commonly used traditionally in several regions of Africa and Asia to treat various ailments;
This work aims to evaluate the hemostatic properties of an aqueous extract of Bambusa vulgaris leaves (EABv) in Wistar rats.
To do this, 5 groups of 4 rats each were formed. Every day, orally, the rats in group 1 (control group) received 2 ml of distilled water. Those in groups 2 and 3 (test groups) received the doses, 500 mg/kg BW and 1000 mg/kg BW of EABv respectively, while groups 4 and 5 received 500 mg/kg BW of aspirin and 500 mg/kg BW of dicynone respectively. The animals were treated for 28 days and each week, the bleeding time and blood count were performed. After the 28 days of treatment, the sedimentation rate was also determined.
The results showed that a dose of 1000 mg/kg BW of EABv significantly reduced bleeding time and increased platelet count and sedimentation rate. EABv administered at a dose of 1000 mg/kg BW did not significantly decrease red blood cell count, hemoglobin level, or hematocrit, unlike aspirin.
These results indicate that the extract exhibits hemostatic properties, but its use at high doses could cause adverse effects on blood cells.
Thus, the dose of 500 mg/kg BW of EABv seems the most appropriate because it exerts a hemostatic effect without altering hematological parameters. These results justify the use of this plant by traditional therapists to treat coagulation disorders.
