The role of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) remains critical in combating the HIV/AIDS epidemic across sub-Saharan Africa, where health systems often face limitations in funding, infrastructure, and public awareness. In Nigeria, particularly in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, NGOs serve as essential partners in prevention, treatment, community advocacy, and care support services. This study explores NGO workers’ knowledge, perceptions, and lived experiences concerning the successes and challenges of HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment efforts. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining structured surveys and semi-structured interviews with NGO personnel across leading HIV/AIDS-focused organizations. Findings reveal that NGO workers possess a high level of awareness regarding global and national HIV/AIDS strategies, including antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence, prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT), and behavioural change campaigns. They identified major successes such as improved ART accessibility, reduced stigma in urban communities, strengthened community outreach, and increased collaboration with government agencies and global partners. However, persistent challenges were reported, including inadequate funding, donor dependence, cultural misconceptions, rural stigma, confidentiality breaches, staff burnout, and inconsistent government support. Many participants also expressed concerns over declining international funding and the sustainability of intervention programs. The study underscores the importance of strengthening NGO capacity, enhancing health education, integrating grassroots awareness campaigns, and improving multisectoral partnerships for long-term program continuation. These findings contribute valuable insights for policymakers, health stakeholders, and global donors to refine intervention strategies, address gaps, and build resilient HIV/AIDS programs within Nigeria’s socio-cultural context.
