Cultural models of illness and health communication strategies improving healthcare access and equity for immigrant patients' populations

Health disparities among immigrant populations often stem from systemic barriers in healthcare access, including linguistic differences, sociocultural misalignments, and the absence of culturally sensitive communication strategies. Traditional biomedical approaches to care tend to emphasize clinical efficiency, yet frequently overlook cultural models of illness the beliefs, narratives, and explanatory frameworks patients use to understand health and disease. These models shape patient expectations, influence health-seeking behaviors, and affect adherence to treatment, making them central to equitable healthcare delivery. From a broad perspective, health communication strategies grounded in cultural competence are critical for addressing inequities across diverse societies. Incorporating cultural models into patient–provider interactions not only improve comprehension but also fosters trust, reduces stigma, and enhances shared decision-making. This is particularly relevant for immigrant communities, who may navigate dual systems of knowledge traditional and biomedical while facing structural vulnerabilities such as marginalization, limited insurance coverage, and fear of institutional discrimination. Narrowing the focus, this study highlights how integrating cultural models of illness into communication frameworks enables tailored interventions that respect patients’ worldviews while aligning them with evidence-based practices. For example, narrative-based communication, community health worker programs, and multilingual digital platforms can bridge cultural and linguistic divides. When healthcare systems adopt these approaches, they enhance access, equity, and patient satisfaction, ultimately improving health outcomes. In sum, recognizing and operationalizing cultural models of illness within health communication strategies provides a pathway toward equitable healthcare systems that are responsive to immigrant patients’ unique needs and experiences.
